1、 名 利 场 中 的 女 性 形 象 分 析张亚杰学位授予单位:哈尔滨工程大学;学科专业:英语语言文学摘 要威廉梅克皮斯 萨克雷是英国最杰出的批判现实主义小说家之一。名利场被普遍认可为他的代表 作,同时也是一部世界经典著作。小说通过描述两位命运成鲜明对比的女主人公一利蓓加夏泼与爱米丽 亚赛特笠,从而深刻而生动地描绘了维多利亚时代的英国社会。在 名利场中,萨克雷诠释了在一个男权 思想和以金钱为中心的世界中女性的地位与形象,抨击了一个虚伪腐败的社会。基于对小说的仔细阅读,本篇 论文的作者将集中从三个方面对比这两位女性形象,即她们对社会的态度,其中包括她们的生存能力,对待家 庭与婚姻的态度以及对待困

Vanity Fair has bee
3、n generally considered as his masterpiece as well as a world classic. It portrays profoundly and vividly the society of London in the Victorian Age following the destinies of the two contrasting female characters-Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley. In Vanity Fair Thackeray examines the position and the
4、 women images in a male-oriented and money-centered world and attacks a hypocritical and corrupted society. Based on a close reading of the novel, the author of the thesis will focus on the comparison of the two main women images through three respects, that is, their attitudes towards society, incl
5、uding their living abilities, their attitudes to family and marriage and their attitudes to difficulties and fate. By exploring the characteristics of the British society in the early nineteenth century, the author draws the conclusion-the two main women images are the chief representatives of the w
6、omen of that time and both are the victims of the society, only in different ways.Their tragedies are the inevitable results of that period. 9、ackerays LifeWilliam Makepeace Thackeray is the greatest representative of the critical realistic writers in the nineteenth century. He was bom in Calcutta in India in 1811. His father, Richmond Thackeray, was a rising young official from a family prominent in the Indian Civil Service. His mother wa
10、s a beauty from another prominent family, who was nineteen at the date of his birth, was left a widow in 1816, when Thackeray was only 4.After his fathers death, he was sent back to England to a succession of preparatory schools which he hated, and then to a public school at the Charterhouse, where
11、he was made even more miserable by bullying and flogging. After six years he left to enter Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1829, where he remained for a little more than a year but leaving Cambridge without taking a degree. He enjoyed the University more than the Charterhouse, 44but in both places hi
12、s achievements were social rather than academic”(吴 188). His relatives wantedhim to study law; he learned toward the fine arts. At Trinity College, Cambridge,he contributed to a little paper called The Snob.His attendance at a school run by a Dr. Turner gave him experience later used in _Fa/r. A vis
13、it to Weimar bore fruit in the sketches of life at a small German court which appears in Vanity Fair. In 1832 he inherited a sum which amounted to about five hundred pounds a year. Some of the money was soon lost in an Indian bank, some at gambling, and some in two newspapers, The National Standard
14、and The Constitutional.About 1834 Thackeray went to Paris and took up the study of art. t4He had early shown talent as a caricaturist”(Pearson 168). His pencil was at its best irr such fantastic work as is found in the initial letters of the chapters in his books, and in those drawings made for the
15、amusement of children.He married Isabella, an Irish girl, daughter of Colonel Matthew Shawe, who enchanted him with her singing, and who was the model for Amelia inFazV.Three daughters were bom, one dying in infancy. After the birth of the third child, Mrs. Thackerays mind was affected and sent to T
16、hackerays mother in Paris. Although Mrs. Thackeray outlived her husband by thirty years, she did notrecover.In 1837 Thackeray came to London and became a regular contributor to Fmseri Magazine. From 1842 to 1851 he was on the staff of Punch, a position that brought in a good income. During his stay
17、at Punch, he wrote Vanity Fair, a satirical panorama of upper-class London life and manners at the beginning of the 19th century, the work which placed him in the first rank of novelists. He completed it when he was thirty-seven.In 1857 Thackeray stood unsuccessfully as a parliamentary candidate for
18、 Oxford. In 1859 he took on the editorship of the Cornhill Magazine. He resigned the position in 1862 because kindliness and sensitivity of spirit made it difficult for him to turn down contributors.“Thackeray drew on his own experience for his writing”(Brooke 16).
