B B Many people are fascinated by the speaking profession. So was I. Ten years ago, I was teaching English as a second language to adult immigrants and bored silly. I was looking around for another profession. When my friend Daniel Star took a leave of absence from his teaching job, he started speaking to groups. Although Daniels first year as a speaker was a little lean(收益差的) financially, he was getting paid more as a speaker than as a teacher since the second year. When his leave of absence was over, his old employer called him in for a new position. Daniel agreed to an interview but then later called to cancel it. I thought he was nuts. I said,“ Daniel, you know speaking is not a secure profession. It's good to have something to fall back on!” And he said something - 4 -that changed my life. He said, “Cathleen, when you have something to fall back on, you fall back!” It rang so true! I saw immediately and with a shock that the teaching job that I thought provided a financial cushion in fact was holding me back from pursuing(追求) my dreams and interests. A few months later, I quitted my job, packed up my car, kissed my grown kids and friends goodbye and moved to a different part of the country to try my luck as a speaker. It was a little unnerving(令人紧张的) to give up my teaching job but Id been wanting to do it for a long time and finally it was sink or swim time! Well, at first I knew nothing about business and had so much to learn about the speaking profession. I did everything the hard way and learned a lot gradually. Finally I succeeded in doing what I love. Because I was happier, my health immediately improved along with my outlook on life. 24.Why did the author want to change her job? A. She was bored with her teaching job. 25.What does the underlined part “he was nuts” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. He was crazy. B. He was smart. C. He was unreliable. D. He was courageous. 26. What can we infer from Daniels words? A. All roads lead to Rome.B. By falling we learn to go safely.C. All things are difficult before they are easy.D. You can't make egg rolls without breaking eggs. 27. What is the authors attitude towards her new job?A. Casual. B. Satisfied. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed. C C Solly is our security guard. He moved in the day after we did. He was light brown, and was very thin and serious. Solly hadn't always been so thin. He'd been out of work for a year, supporting an extended family. “My wife says I must buy new clothes,” he said. “My church clothes are falling off me. But I told her, Don't worry. I'll get fat again. Now I have a job. ”This news kept our family buzzing(低声谈话) through quite a few mealtimes. My kids announced they were going to bake for him every day. And so every evening my husband and children began delivering food to Solly. Just outside our gate, all down Jabu Ndlovu Street, as the day begins to fade, security guards take their places. They are cheerful. And they sleep right through their shifts. No one expects a security guard to stay awake. That's why the whole street knew Solly. He not only stayed awake, but also walk around to check the block, picked up litter, and knocked on doors and asked residents to turn their music down. Then one night, a car ran into a cyclist. Solly saw the crash. He saw the - 5 -driver drive away. For two hours, Solly helped the rider, the police, and the ambulance personnel. The next day, some residents complained: Solly wasn't at the gate last night. Solly wasn't doing tis job. After the whole story came out, Solly kept his job. After a month, Solly wasn't getting any fatter. He lived far from the city. His taxi ride to work each day cost him one-third of his salary, so we got him a used bike. But he wouldn't take it until he saved the money. A few weeks later he fetched the bike. “My wife thinks Im joking - a bike for this price,” he said with a smile on his face. “I'll ride home and surprise her.” I wondered if his wife would smile too. 28. Which word can best describe the authors family? A. Intelligent. B. Courageous. C. Kind-hearted. D. Strong-minded. D D With so much focus on childrens use of screens, it's easy for parents to forget about their own screen use. “Tech is designed to really suck you in,” says Jenny Radesky in her study of digital play, “and digital products are there to promote maximum involvement. It makes it hard to disconnect, and leads to a lot of bleed-over into the family routine.” Radesky has studied the use of mobile phones and tablets at mealtimes by giving mother-child pairs a food-testing exercise. She found that mothers who used devices(设备) during the exercise started 20 percent fewer verbal and 39 percent fewer nonverbal communications with their children. During a separate observation, she saw that phones became a source of tension. Parents would be looking at their emails while the children would be making excited bids for their attention. Babies are excited to look at parents faces. If those faces are blank and unresponsive - as they often are when absorbed in a device - it makes the children feel anxious or confused. Radesky cites(引用) the “still face experiment”, which was conducted by psychologist Ed Tronick. In it ,a mother is asked to communicate with her child in a normal way before putting on a blank expression and not giving her any visual social feedback(反馈). The - 6 -child becomes increasingly upset as she tries to draw her mother's attention. On the other hand, Tronick himself is concerned that the worries about kids use of screens are born out of a theory that parents should always be communicating with their children:“ If you're failing to expose your child to 30,000 words you are neglecting(忽视) them.” Tronick believes that just because a child isn't learning from the screen doesn't mean there is no value to it - particularly if it gives parents time to have a shower, do housework or simply have a break from their child. This makes them feel happier, which lets them be more available to their child the rest of the time. 32.What does Radesky think of digital products?A. They make our lives easier. B. They absorb users attention. C. They simplify routine matters.D. They improve interpersonal relations. 33.What does the food-testing exercises show about parents screen use?A. It narrows children's focus. B. It takes away babies appetites. C. It reduces mother-child communication. D. It slows down babies verbal development. 34.What might Radesky want to show by mentioning the “still face experiment”?A. Verbal expressions are unnecessary for emotional exchange. B. Most misunderstandings are caused by nonverbal expressions. C. Children can easily understand their parents expressions. D. Parents need to respond to children's emotional needs. 35.What might Tronick agree with about the kids use of screens? A. It helps them with their homework. B. It gives their parents some free time. C. It makes their parents more creative. D. It helps them become more attentive.第二节(共第二节(共 5 5 小题;每小题小题;每小题 2 2 分,满分分,满分 1010 分)分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多于 选项。TheThe writer'swriter's blockblockWhatever it is you have to write, the idea of a blank page or screen - can be very discouraging.
