12、esent second and last part,in which the more difficult parts of the subject were not to have been treated.It was just at this time(1895)that attacks on the theory of gases began to increase.I am convinced that these attacks are merely based on a misunderstanding,and that the role of gas theory in sc
13、ience has not yet been played out.Boltzmann(1898)In my opinion it would be a great tragedy for science if the theory of gases were temporarily thrown into oblivion because of a momentary hostile attitude toward it,as was for example the wave theory because of Newtons authority.I am conscious of being only an individual struggling weakly against the stream of time.But it still remains in my power to contribute in such a way that,when the theory of gases is again revived,not too much will have to be rediscovered.
