10、odern military commander can learn from Hannibal.The first lesson I want to talk about is the importance of self-confidence and the ability to inspire confidence.Let me give you an example.Hannibal advanced from North Africa,and his objective was Rome.So,the logical course of action was to invade It
11、aly from the sea,but he didnt do that.Instead,he crossed to Spain and took his men and elephants across the Alps.Now,to cross these incredibly high mountains,with the terrible cold,hostile tribes and elephants screaming,Hannibal must have had complete belief in his ability to succeed,and he must hav
12、e transmitted this to his men.The result was that Hannibal achieved total surprise.The north of Italy was the last place that the Romans expected to see Hannibal.A second leadership lesson has to do with the importance of imagination.I bet that the night before the Battle of Cannae,Hannibal was awak
13、e all night thinking about his strategy.The Romans plan was simple what theyd always done just beat the enemy with numbers.But Hannibal had half as many men as the Romans,so he had to think how to use his troops thats to say,he had to think outside of the normal tactics of those days.A third leaders
14、hip lesson was the way that Hannibal took care of his troops.On the eve of the Battle of Cannae,he made sure his men were rested and fed.I am sure looking after his men had a lot to do with his ability to get them to follow him.Related to this,the fourth point I want to mention is the importance of
15、a sense of humour.Another example.On the eve of the Battle of Cannae,he went out to do a recce with a number of his commanders.One of the men with him was called Gisgo.Now,Gisgo took one look at this massive,impressive Roman army and he was scared.He said,“What an amazing army”.Well,Hannibal turned
16、round and said,“Dont worry,Gisgo,theres one even more amazing thing the Romans dont haveand thats a man called Gisgo!”Now,you know,that story spread through Hannibals army and it got everyone laughing.So,with a sense of humour,Hannibal knew how to relax his men before the battle.The fifth lesson I w
17、ant to mention is Hannibals ability to maintain discipline,and a good example of this is the way he kept control over his cavalry.You know,in those days the cavalry often lacked discipline on the battlefield.But Hannibal kept really tight control over his troops during the Battle of Cannae and when
18、the cavalry engagement was over,Hannibals cavalry attacked the Roman infantry.Now,in those days,that kind of discipline was amazing.In a similar way,he showed the ability to delegate command,and this is our sixth lesson the importance of delegating command and students feel that leadership qualities
