1、Book ReportJulie Lee Book reports can help:-improve their reading comprehension-enhance their ability to analyze the story and the characters Three major parts:I.Information about the writer:-his name,-the books he has published,-the years of his birth and death,-the publisher of the book.Cautions:a
2、.including some historical and social background to which the book is related b.by reading some reference materials,such as:-biographies of the writer -histories of the period in which the book was written2.A summary of the book under discussion -a summary of the book(the story and main characters)-
3、some comments on the book(personal interpretation of the meaning of the book)Cautions:a.concise,clear and easy to understand b.subjective and centering on the major theme of the book c.the tense of the book report depending on the subject matter of the book -a novel or a play or a science fiction,-t
4、he present tense -nonfiction such as history books-the past tense is 3.the comment-most important all a.to evaluate the book according to the authors own personal interpretation b.to discuss the merits and demerits of the book,the social and/or historical significance of the book c.-competent enough
5、 to discuss the writing style of the author,he or she should feel free to do so Book Report Format I.Title II.Introductory Paragraph -The first sentence-state for which instructor and class the book-report-being written -The second sentence-state the title of the book and the authors name -The third
6、 sentences-tell how many pages of the book&the name of the publisher -The fourth sentence-state basic bibliographic information about the book Bibliographic information:-the author and title -what company published the book,-what year it was published in -any other relevant information a.the edition
7、 b.if the book has been translated,simplified or abridged (From copyright page and the back of the title page)The next sentence-state the reason(s)you decided to read this book Typical reasons might be:o liking the author o liking this type of book (i.e.mystery,western,adventure or romance,etc.)o re
8、commended the book to you o on a required reading list o liking the cover Attention:These reasons-not have to be complex Most people choose the books because they like the author or somebody recommended it to them.If you chose the book because you like the author,then state why you like that author.
9、An optional sentence-if the cover(back cover)of the book offering any additional information then add a sentence with that information o Was the book a best seller?o Are there X million copies in print?o Did it win any major awards?III.Main Character(s)Paragraph The first sentence:-state who the mai
10、n character or characters of the book,and why they are important -Referring to this person or these persons as the Main Character or Main Characters at least a complex sentence-needed for this,and probably more than one sentence IV.Other Characters Paragraph -composing at least one sentence for each
11、 of the other prominent or important characters in the book -stating the name of each of the other important characters,and the key role that each one plays in the book -listing each of five or six prominent characters and stating their role in the book will give you a good sized paragraph V.Plot Su
12、mmary Paragraph the main points to cover:-the type of book(Mystery,Western,etc.)the place or country that the book set in the time period that the book set in (e.g.:19th century,the present,ancient Rome,the 23rd century)-other important physical locations,like:ships,airplanes,houses,or buildings-oth
13、er notable attributes of the book (Was it violent,scary,fast paced,etc.).What is the main character trying to do?What is the outcome of the book?etc.Make sure -cover all of the major parts of the plot VI.Personal Impressions and Conclusion Paragraph -Simply talk about what you liked or did not like
14、about the book -Use this paragraph as your conclusion a.summarizing your overall impressions of the book b.bringing the report to a close Do so by:-Starting with a sentence that states that you are now writing a conclusion For example:My final thoughts on A Fine Balance are that it is a fascinating
15、book but I am not entirely sure if I completely understood the thematic message of the book.-Restating your reasons why you liked and/or disliked the book using different words.a.writing two sentences that talk about the books good points and weak points b.writing a sentence or two about what you learned from the book c.closing with a sentence that states whether you would recommend the book to others Typically,your book report -not exceeding two double-spaced pages,-somewhere between 600 and 800 words in length,-in size 12 font -Using either Times New Roman,Ariel,or Verdana script THE END
