2、rimaginationtograspthemeaningoftheexistenceofimagination.Ahistorianusedtosaythatthemainreasonwhyhumanbeingshavebeenabletosurpassotherspeciesonearthandtobuildcivilizationsisthatweareabletocreatesomethinginourheadsthatdoesnotexistinreality.Inthefuture,whenartificialintelligencebecomessmarterthanus,ima
3、ginationmaybetheonlyadvantagewehaveoverAI.Sciencefictionisaliterarygenrebasedonimagination.Andthefirstsci-fiworksthatimpressedmewerethosebyArthurC.Clarke.TogetherwithJulesVerneandGeorgeWells,ArthurClarkewasamongthefirstWesternmodernsci-fiwriterstoenterChina.Intheearly1980s,thetwonovels2001:ASpaceOdy
4、sseyandRendezvousWithRamawerepublishedinmycountry.Atthattime,theCulturalRevolutionjustended.Whiletheoldlifeandfaithhadcollapsed,thenewoneshadnotyetbeenestablished.Likeotheryoungpeople,Ifeltlostduringthatperiod.Thesetwobooks,forthefirsttime,however,broughtmyimaginationtolife.Mymindopeneduplikeithasne
5、verbefore.Ifeltlikeanarrowstreamfinallyembracingthesea.AtmidnightwhenIfinishedreading2001:ASpaceOdyssey,Iwalkedoutofthehouseandstaredatthestarrysky.Iwasabletoseethegalaxy,thankstotheunpollutedskyofChinabackthen.Thatnight,Inoticedthatthestarryskylookednothinglikebefore.Forthefirsttimeinmylife,Iwasawe

7、raduallydawnsonmethatpeoplelikeme,whowereborninthe1960sinChina,areprobablytheluckiestpeopleinhumanhistory.Nogenerationislikeus,nogenerationhasbeenabletowitnesssuchtremendouschangesintheworldaroundus.Theworldwearelivingintodayiscompletelydifferentfromthatofourchildhood.Andsuchchangesaretakingplacewit
