、DataCoreSANsymphony Planning and managementChapter 3B:Product OverviewIntroduction This chapter gives an overview of SANsymphony. Here we look at the modules that are covered in further detail in this course.Additionally we will look at additional features available in SAN symphony and its packaging.
、ObjectivesWhen you complete this chapter you will be able to briefly:Identify SANsymphony modules Discuss additional SANsymphony features Understand SANsymphony packagingChapter OverviewIntroduction The modules discussed in this section are further discussed throughout this course.Furthermore, severa

、 mapped to application servers. You can also create snapshots, configure network managed volumes,AIM and channels.STP/IPSANsymphony SCSI Transport Protocol/IP(STP/IP)provides a“connection of convenience”constrained only by the quailty of the connection provided.STP/IP allows clients to connect to a SA
、Nsymphony SAN without a fibre channel adapter.(In the context of STP/IP,we refer to“clients”who may be application servers.Laptops,or desktops.)The connection is established using any adapter that allows a TCP/IP connection, usually the ethernet adapter.SANsymphony STP/IP consists of drivers installe
、d on the client and on a SANsyphony SDS.These drivers work together to establish an STP/IP connection and present SCSI volumes to the client.Once a connection is established,SANsymphony will see it as new channelas if an additional fibre channel HBA had been installed.SANsymphony can then manage and

、SANsymphony ModulesNetwork Manage VolumesNetwork Managed Volumes(NMV)dramatically increase storage capacity utilization by providing automated provisioning that eliminates the need to guess how much storage each application will need over its lifetime.NMVs get rid of the waste that comes from over p

、 allows volumes to be mirrored synchronously for high availability. It is best suited for applications that require a secondary copy of data to be maintained in real-time.(Requires SANsymphony Network Edition.)In addition to primary and secondary disks in a mirrored set,SANsymphony supports tertiary
、mirrors.Alternate PathingAlternate Pathing(AP)is an extension to SDS network-mirrored virtual volumes. It allows an application server interruption-free access to the virtual volume in the event of a component-volume failure or even the failure of an SDS node.AP is able to redirect I/Os down a second
、ary path to a secondary virtual volume when it detects a fault(indicated by a timeout condition while waiting for a response from the disk)anywhere in the primary path to its primary virtual volume. The mirroring of virtual volumes is handled by the Network Mirroring option on a collaborating SDS.SAN
、symphony ModulesAlternate PathingAlternate Pathing software running on the application server automatically switches to the“healthy”SDS node. After the failure has been rectified(faulty cable replacement, for instance),the SDS nodes will automatically re-synchronize the mirror set and switch the appli
